Tucson …Notes via Twitter from Michael Moore
Sunday, January 9th, 2011
Here are Michael Moore’s comments that he posted throughout the day yesterday on Twitter as the tragic events unfolded in Tucson. There is much that isn’t known at this moment about the shooter, but one thing that is known is the climate of hate and violence that exists these days. And yesterday wasn’t the first time Congresswoman Giffords was a target of this violence. Nor was she its only victim (please read the link about 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, a young girl who was born on 9/11 and died yesterday in a sad and tortured post-9/11 world).
Mike’s postings include links that provide context and background that the mainstream media is dancing around and hoping to avoid. (If you’d like to get his updates and analysis of this and other events each day, sign up here.)
Our condolences go out to all the victims and their families.

The main suspect in the Arizona massacre has links to a fanatical pro-white magazine.
Fox News claimed it had seen a Department of Homeland Security memo which said Jared Lee Loughner, 22, had ties to American Renaissance, which is staunchly anti-immigration, anti-government and anti-Semitic.
Arizona Republican Gabrielle Giffords, the target of the mass killing, is ‘the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government. She was also opposite this group’s ideology when it came to immigration debate,’ according the DHS memo.
Mrs Giffords is the granddaughter of Akiba Hornstein, the son of a Lithuanian rabbi who in the 1940s moved from New York to Tucson. He later changed his name to Giff Giffords in an effort to avoid anti-Semitism.

Loughner has been described as unstable and has been known to make death threats in the past, according to the local sheriff.
The FBI is investigating whether the man is the same person who posted a rambling Internet manifesto accusing the government of mind control and demanding a new currency.
Loughner was taken into custody moments after the shooting at a political meeting held by Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords in a supermarket parking lot. Six people died and Giffords had a critical head wound.
It has emerged today that he legally bought the handgun he used in the shooting – after passing an FBI background check.
He bought the firearm from Sportsman’s Warehouse’s Tucson store in November.
The company’s vice president of hunting operations, Matt French, told Fox News that Loughner was required to pass an FBI background check, which he did ‘immediately and without incident’.
Mr French said he could not confirm whether the gun purchased in November was the same gun used in Saturday’s shooting, but the company was ‘cooperating fully with the authorities in investigating this horrible tragedy.’
Sheriff Clarence Dupnik of Pima County, where the shooting happened, told reporters the suspect, detained shortly immediately the shooting, had a troubled past.
‘All I can tell you is that this person may have a mental issue,’ Dupnik said.
Dupnik said there had been earlier contact between Loughner and law enforcement after he had made death threats, although they had not been against Mrs Giffords. He would not reveal who they were against.
He said the authorities believe he may not have been working alone.
In a series of YouTube videos, a person identifying himself as Jared Lee Loughner complains about government mind control, treasonous laws, illiterate dreamers and the U.S. currency.
He also gives his own definition of terrorism.
‘If I define terrorist then a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism especially as a political weapon,’ the text in the video – entitled ‘My Final Thoughts – Jared Lee Loughner!’ – reads.
‘I define terrorist.
‘Thus, a terrorist is a person who employs terror or terrorism, especially as a political weapon.
‘If you call me a terrorist then the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem.
‘You call me a terrorist.
‘Thus, the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem.’
‘The government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar,’ the person wrote in one of the videos, which contain music and white text on a black background.
‘No! I won’t pay debt with a currency that’s not backed by gold and silver. No, I won’t trust in God.’
The videos, which are set to music, mostly consist of text flashing up on screen. Some contain diagrams.
Loughner appears to be attempting to use the basic rules of logic to frame his bizarre, paranoid philosophy.
In the video entitled This Student At Pima Community College: An Unconstitutional crime!, for example, Loughner writes:
‘If the police remove you from the educational facility for talking then removing you from the educational facility for talking is unconstitutional in the United States.’
‘The police remove you from the educational facility for talking. Thus, removing you from the educational facility for talking is unconstitutional in the United States. This situation is fraud because the police are unconstitutional!’
He continues: ‘Every police officer in the United States as of now is unconstitutionally working. Pima Community College police are police in the United States. Therefore, Pima Community College police are unconstitutionally working. The police are unconstitutionally working!’
One former classmate said Loughner was expelled from a maths course after frequent outbursts. Lynda Sorenson said: ‘He was obviously disturbed.’
On MySpace, Loughner appears to have posted a picture of a handgun before the attack.
The 22-year-old positioned a photo of the White House behind the weapon. The words ‘United States History’ also appear.
He also talked about enlisting for the U.S. Army online. The Army has confirmed he tried to enlist, but was rejected – and officials would not reveal why for privacy reasons.
In the YouTube profile, created under the name Classitup10, Loughner says he attended Thornydale Elementary, Tortolita Middle School, Mountain View High School, Northwest Aztec Middle College, and Pima Community College.
He writes: ‘My favorite interest was reading, and I studied grammar. Conscience dreams were a great study in college!’
The postings describe no coherent political ideology, said Mark Potok, an investigator with the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks violent extremists. Loughner was not in the Center’s database of hate groups and radicals.
‘He certainly sounds like he’s gone off the deep end, but at the same time, he is mouthing some rhetoric that is quite reminiscent of the anti-government movement … It’s hard to know what to make of his ideology.’
A federal law enforcement official said the FBI was trying to establish whether the shooting suspect was the same person who posted the videos.
In a biographical sketch on the site, Loughner writes that he attended Tucson-area schools and says his favourite books include Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf, Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto, and Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, set in an insane asylum.
‘My favorite activity is conscience dreaming: the greatest inspiration in my political business information,’ the writer of the post says.
‘He has kind of a troubled past and we’re not convinced that he acted alone,’ Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said in a press conference in reference to the suspect, who he would not officially name.
Roger Whithed, 52, a construction worker who lives two doors down from Loughner, said he saw him during this week, sitting out front the single family home he lived in smoking cigarettes.
‘He was a kind of on-the-edge of society type guy, blue jeans, baseball cap, one of those guys who hasn’t really figured it out. A little rebellious looking, didn’t look like he was working really or doing anything productive,’ he said.
Grant Wiens, 22, was a year ahead of Loughner at Mountain View High School in Tucson, and was recently in a biology class with him at a local community college. He remembers Loughner smoked heavily and occasionally smoked marijuana.
‘You never expect this to happen, regardless of how well you know someone. I think I would have said he would have been more likely to do it than some people, just a gut instinct,’ he said.
‘There was something about his personality, but nothing I can put my finger on He was smart, opinionated, but maybe a little troubled.’
Wiens said he never mentioned Mrs Giffords, guns or politics. ‘He was opinionated, though he got along with people, he never seemed to care what people thought.’
